SUN, sand and surf? Now it seems the plastic transaction card can be added to the list of January's main activities.
National Australia Bank has reported a big jump in ATM and EFTPOS transactions processed by its systems over the traditional Christmas to Australia Day holiday period.
The bank reported yesterday that total EFTPOS, card and ATM transactions over Boxing Day to Australia Day were up 17.5 per cent on the same period 12 months ago.
NAB said there had been significant year-on-year growth over the past five years during the holiday period, with almost 164 million ATM, ETPOS and card transactions processed during the latest period.
This compares with 91.3 million in the same period in 2007-08 and 140 million in the 2011-12 holiday season.
The bank said the latest figures represented seven transactions for every Australian during the four-week holiday period.
